B.P.R.D. Vols. 10 and 11: The Warning and The Black Goddess

Lowdown: Loved it. The best comic published today.
If you aren’t reading B.P.R.D., start. Volume 11 just came out. That’s a lot of catching up to do, but worth it. I recommend using your local library. Don’t jump on in the middle. Start at the beginning.
After finishing volumes 10 and 11, The Warning and The Black Goddess, I wrote this to the creative team:
Dear B.P.R.D. Creative Team:
I started reading comics as a teenager. I still remember the amazement and excitement when I first read stories like “The Dark Knight Returns”, “V for Vendetta”, “Concrete”, etc. Everything was new and fresh and I read as much as I could afford.
In my thirties now, and as time continues to march by, I get excited by fewer and fewer comics. Four or five years ago, I almost gave up reading them altogether. I figured the problem was me; I had changed and no longer enjoyed comic books.
But I persevered. Last year, due to budget cuts, I stopped reading monthly titles and switched to trade paperbacks. Which brings me to last night, when I finished reading “The Warning” and “The Black Goddess”.
Wow.
B.P.R.D. is the best comic being published today.
It’s the whole package: artwork, story, colors, letters, editing.
I love the characters, who behave like real people with real fears, insecurities, personalities.
I love that I can never guess where the plot is going. Any character’s life can change or end on any page: nobody is safe.
I love how dialog and captions don’t explain everything. Even when a character is talking, it seems like some of their words have been taken out and replaced by artwork. (This may seem like an obvious part of the medium, but so many others both describe and show, treating the art like a second-class citizen.)
Thanks for all the hard work and dedication. B.P.R.D. started out great and is only getting better. It is one of the few reasons I still read and love comic books. One of the few books I continue to buy.
