Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography
by Chester Brown
Lowdown: Really liked it. I had never heard of Louis Riel before, but shortly after starting to read this fascinating biography of him, I couldn’t put it down. More about the events of the man’s life than the man himself, I found it engrossing.
From Wikipedia:
Louis David Riel was a Canadian politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba, and leader of the Métis people [those of mixed white and Native American ancestry] of the Canadian prairies. He led two resistance movements against the Canadian government and its first post-Confederation Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. Riel sought to preserve Métis rights and culture as their homelands in the Northwest came progressively under the Canadian sphere of influence. He is regarded by many as a Canadian folk hero today.
Riel was certainly an interesting historical figure. Brown’s biography never tries to get inside the man’s head. Instead, Brown focuses on reporting the deeds of Riel’s life. This doesn’t lessen the impact of Riel’s actions and the events he was drawn in to.
