Mage Volume 1: The Hero Discovered

by Matt Wagner

Lowdown: Liked it. Mage: The Hero Discovered is a modern-day fantasy story, with magic, dragons, and good vs. evil. The writing is excellent. The art is excellent. A solid story from Matt Wagner.

Kevin Matchstick was a lonely, disaffected everyman until events beyond his control conspired to prod him into becoming the hero he never wanted to be. Accompanied by a mysterious wizard and a crew of loyal friends, the reluctant hero must discover the courage to accept his true power and defeat the dark powers that threaten reality itself.

I’ve been a fan of Wagner since I read Grendel: War Child. Mage: The Hero Discovered is another solid book from Wagner. Great characters, a unique idea, awesome art. Very well done.

The first part of a planned trilogy, volume 2, The Hero Defined was published in 2006 (it’s on my to-read list). Work on the final volume, The Hero Denied, has yet to begin.
