Tales from Outer Suburbia

by Shaun Tan

Lowdown: Liked it. A magical, fantastical collection of wonderfully illustrated short stories. Perfect for young readers, but adults should enjoy it, too.

Tales from Outer Suburbia is a collection of a half dozen or so magical, fantastical short stories beautifully illustrated by Shaun Tan. It almost felt like the illustrations came first, and Tan sat down, staring at each one, until an appropriate story popped out.

It’s only 92 pages long, the majority of which is artwork, so can easily be read in an hour-long sitting. It’s a perfect book for young readers. I would have gobbled this up repeatedly as a third grader, back when I was reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory almost every week.
