The Lost Symbol
by Dan Brown
Lowdown: Loved it. I certainly don’t judge this book on technical merits. Brown will never win Pulitzer or Nobel literature prizes. But for engrossing, pick-up-and-read-until-you-finish pleasure, he’s hard to beat. This one even had a surprise for me at the end.
Brown understands that people love conspiracies and are fascinated by symbols and their hidden meanings. He takes those two things and mixes them with current events and present settings. This, in turn, makes our lives and countries and surroundings seem a little more ominous. A little juicier and gossip worthy. When reading one of his books, I’m constantly asking myself “Is that true? Or did he make that up?” He keeps me guessing.
Of course I don’t believe anything the guy writes, but his books fun anyway. The Lost Symbol (and any of Brown’s books starring Robert Langdon) are pure escapist enjoyment.
